*To be on this list the player needs a roster percentage under 50% and is often picked up and dropped weekly to maximize the amount of games your lineup has.
Max games: 3
Chicago
Kirby Dach – C – 35% Owned
Dach is being shuffled down in the line-up with the return of Toews, but he will see powerplay time and has a safe floor of fantasy points with his peripherals of shots, hits, blocks, and pims to accompany his 0.5ppg pace. With centre being the deepest position in fantasy, you may be able to find a better single game options.
Dallas
Denis Gurianov – LW/RW – 29% Owned
The 24 year old Gurianov showed offensive flashes last season as he posted 12 goals and 18 assists in 55 games. The dual position player should be able to slide into your roster to gain some games and has the chance to get a couple points.
Montreal
Josh Anderson – RW – 38%
Anderson with provide you with an excellent consistent amount of hits and shots each game. He is a streaky scorer putting away 17 in 52 last year and look for that to improve with Drouin returning to open some space and feed him the puck.
Jonathan Drouin – C/LW – 13%
As touched on above, look for Drouin to return to form after dealing with anxiety and insomnia and the line of Drouin, Dvorak, and Anderson could be very effective this season. Drouin should rack up a couple of assists this week, but doesn’t have the hit or shot volume of Anderson.
Jake Allen – G – 51%
Bending the rules of under 50% criteria for the list as he is available for almost half of the leagues out there. Allen will be leaned upon for the start of the season since Carey Price has entered the Player Assistance Program. Even if you only pick him up for the Sabres match up, and drop him again, that may help some people win this week of limited games.
New York Rangers
Kaapo Kakko – RW – 27%
Kakko will be starting the season playing with Strome and Panarin and has looked to be growing into an impactful player and will hopefully begin to start living up to his NHL draft position.
Ottawa
Josh Norris – C – 49%
With Brady Tkachuk holding out to start the season, Tim Stutzle will be sliding up to the top line with Norris and Batherson. Norris is a decent fill in as he will have plenty of ice time and PP usage and likely be apart of any scoring that occurs for Ottawa. People avoid players on bad teams, but Norris will have every opportunity to produce and is playing with the few very skilled players that are on the Senators’ roster.
Pittsburgh
Jeff Carter – C/RW – 38%
With the absence of Crosby and Malkin to start the Penguins’ season will thrust Carter into 1st line centre and top PP. Carter is not the player he once was, but the pieces around him and the heavy role he will have in the offence to start the season makes his fantasy value great for a simple waiver wire pick-up.
Seattle
Jared McCann -C/LW – 38% **IN COVID PROTOCOL
Big asterisk here, keep an eye on McCann’s status. If he has negative tests and is allowed to play this week he has value as arguably the most offensively talented player in Seattle and will get plenty of looks on the PP.
Tampa Bay
Alex Killorn – LW/RW – 42%
Killorn gets top powerplay deployment and has dual position allows him flexibility in your line-up. Not a stellar player on his own but the players he plays with can inflate his value which you can cash in on for a weekly rental.
Toronto
Nick Ritchie – LW -24%
Ritchie’s value is similar to Killorn’s but even more elevated as he is playing top line and he gets a high level of hits and shots. Ritchie will be motivated in his first games with the Leafs to make an impact both physically and on the scoresheet against divisional rivals, including two of those games at home.
Vancouver
Nils Hoglander – LW/RW – 18%
Hoglander had a superb rookie season amassing 13 goals, 14 assists in 56 games and an expected upward trend from that pace is very reasonable. He has a goal scorers touch and fires the puck plenty and will find the scoresheet often this season. Be aware his fantasy value dips for banger categories such as hits or blocks.
Minimum Games: 1
